June, 2004 - On the horizon: Photomodulation uses pulses of low-energy light (less than what's emitted from a 25-watt bulb) to deliver signals, like a remote control, to skin cells. During the treatment you sit in front of the device, called GentleWaves®, which resembles a computer screen. When the machine is set at a certain parameter (much as a remote control is programmed with a TV-specific code), the light painlessly, and without side effects, "turns on" the cells responsible for collagen production and "turns off" production of the enzyme that breaks down collagen, says Geronemus. It can also increase cell production and turnover; doctors believe that the light energy is somehow converted into cell energy within the skin, similar to photosynthesis in plants, says Dover. Studies show a mild to moderate improvement in wrinkles and skin texture and tone after eight to ten treatments, says Geronemus.

April, 2006 - The 70-second wrinkle eliminator What it is: Lasers can burn. Intense Pulsed Light can redden skin, but GentleWaves® Select has neither of these drawbacks. This device is a smaller, more portable version of GentleWaves®, the light-emitting diode (LED) machine cleared but the FDA last year for diminishing the appearance of eye wrinkles. (Some doctors believe it can also reduce pore size and speed wound healing.) This compact model - intended for spas operated by physicians - emits the same strength of pulsing yellow light as the original, and it is just as effective. The only difference is that the larger version treats the whole face in 35 seconds, whereas this one can treat only half the face in that time. How it works: The light stimulates skin cells to produce healthy, new skin-plumping collagen and slow the breakdown of existing collagen. When study subjects were exposed to this light twice a week for eight weeks, they had a measurable improvement in fine lines and wrinkles. Research has found that a rest period between sessions is important for effectiveness. When available: this medical-spa version was just released in March. According to some doctors, an at-home version is on the drawing board.

March, 2006 - The bright idea Roy Geronemus, MD. When a laser company has a new machine, it goes straight from R&D to NYC dermatologist Roy Geronemus, MD. If Geronemus, the founder of the laser program at New York University School of Medicine (he's a clinical professor there), doesn't give his stamp of approval, chances are the laser will never hit the market. The author of more than 165 medical articles and books, Geronemus has also been involved in technology trials, such as those for the light-emitting diodes that led to the development of the GentleWaves® skin rejuvenation machine. Trick of the trade: While Geronemus' office has a makeup room where patients can pop in after a laser procedure to cover any flushing, the doctor often sends clients for a GentleWaves® session instead. "We've found that two 35-second doses of GentleWaves® post-laser treatment minimizes redness."

February, 2005 - gentle~waves Stimulate collagen Smooth fine wrinkles Improve texture New buzz: "While most lasers are for the face, the soon-to-be-released Fraxel model can be used all over - wherever there's sun damage," says Grossman. (Expect five to seven treatments for good results.) GentleWaves®, an LED treatment - and the Lucky beauty department's latest addiction - gives skin a great glow and takes only 35 seconds per treatment. "I went to a dermatology meeting, and I was like, What did those people do to their skin?" admits Airan. "The results really impressed me." (She recommends 8 to 10 sessions, for about $1,000 in all.)

May, 2005 - A New Treatment For Eye Wrinkles Wrinkles in the skin around the eyes can be smoothed safely and effectively with a device called GentleWaves®, the FDA has determined. Wearing protective covers over the eyes themselves, patients sit facing a panel embedded with 2,000 tiny, pulsating yellow lights. "For the first time, we are both slowing collagen breakdown and building up new collagen with no pain, no redness, and no serious side effects," says Robert A. Weiss, associate professor of dermatology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, who participated in a study involving 90 patients. The treatment, which is the only one of its kind approved for eye wrinkles, can target other areas and reduce pigmentation as well. Best results occur after two sessions a week for at least a month, and it is considered especially effective after microdermabrasion. It is not a substitute for eyelid surgery, which removes excess skin and bulging fat around the eyes.

April, 2005 - Beauty ID: light-emitting diodes What if turning on collagen production were as easy as flipping on a television? Light-emitting diodes (LEDs), the power source behind the latest wrinkle-erasing machines, have come a long way from their humble beginnings in remote controls and alarm clocks. Using less energy than the average desk lamp, LEDs emit a gentle UV-free beam powerful enough to cure skin problems from acne to cancer. Recent research on LEDs proves the diodes do more than boost collagen; they can also minimize breakouts and calm inflammations. While all colors may increase cellular fibroblast activity, certain shades have a targeted effect. A 2004 study published in Journal of Drugs in Dermatology reported that eight 35-second treatments with the yellow LEDs found in GentleWaves® machines (which were FDA approved for wrinkles earlier this year) reduced fine lines by 56 percent, redness by 65 percent, and hyperpigmentation by 62 percent. But the glowing skin of the gentlemen who invented GentleWaves® is perhaps the best advertisement for LEDs. "Every couple of months I would see these older scientists at derm meetings and they kept looking younger and younger. When I asked what they were doing to their skin, they said they were using GentleWaves®," says Lisa Airan, MD, a clinical instructor of dermatology at NYC's Mount Sinai Hospital. "That cemented my decision to buy it for my practice."

Date, 0000 - The main benefits are a reduction in fine lines, freckles, brown spots, and redness. Many patients opt for it as an add-on to microdermabrasion, peels, Botox, or Restylane - a "while I'm here" kind of thing - well, except for a woman I met in Dr. Stevens's waiting room. A 60-year-old league tennis player, she likes the fact that that there's no downtime with GentleWaves®. "I had a series of ten, and now I come back every month for maintenance," she said. "I'll never have another face-lift. I'll just continue with these treatments. They fit into my life."

August, 2005 - What do P.Diddy, Tory Burch, and Donna Karan have in common? They all trust their skin to Patricia Wexler, M.D. gentle~waves The progressive "bottled light" technology contained in all of her new products was developed with combating these problems in mind. It is modeled after GentleWaves® L.E.D. Photomodulation, the recently FDA-approved "lunchtime" treatment in which a narrow band of light diodes pulsates across the face for 45 seconds at a time, producing firmer, plumper, more elastic skin over a series of sessions. ("I have patients who are enjoying it more than Botox and fillers," says Wexler. "Tory Burch had it done, and within weeks, ten of her friends came in asking for the same thing.") The treatment works by "shutting off" the harmful matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) - enzymes in the skin, significantly higher in postmenopausal women, caused by environmental insults like UV exposure - which hinder collagen and elastin production. "Studies have shown that not only was less collagen and elastin breaking down with GentleWaves®, but that more was being produced," she says.

GentleWaves® This painless light therapy offers help for former sun-worshippers. The promise: Imagine a pain-free, low-energy light that, when shined on skin for less than a minute, minimizes fine lines and wrinkles, reduces pore size, diminishes dark spots, and gives skin a smoother texture. That's the claim made by GentleWaves®, a new device that uses a light-emitting diode, or LED, to help "recharge the batteries" of skin cells, encouraging collagen production. The reality: GentleWaves® won approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration last December, backed by a trial in which every patient had smoother skin, less redness, and improvement in wrinkles around the eyes. It seems that doctors are giving the therapy a vote of confidence, too: "I've found that it really does give people a more even skin tone and smoother texture," Alster says. Because its light source isn't heat-generated, it is painless. The numbers: Doctors suggest a series of treatments once a week for 6 weeks. (Follow-up procedures are recommended anywhere from monthly to twice a year.) You'll see results in about 4 weeks, with continued improvement for up to a year. Cost: $60 to $100 per treatment. The bottom line: Fast, ouchless, and comparatively inexpensive to correct fine lines and sunspots. But don't expect dramatic tightening.

October, 2004 - what's new According to Wexler, the newest way to reduce sun damage is with a light-emission diode machine. It contains 2,000 lightbulbs that pulsate over skin, leaving it more evenly textured and pigmented. "Photo modulation therapy, as it is also known, helps prevent collagen breakdown too," says Wexler. " More is produced, and less is broken down." (Eight treatments are recommended over the course of a month, at $150 each.)

Date, 0000 - The GentleWaves® LED photomodulation is another way to reduce the hallmarks of photoaging, such as fine lines and a blotchy complexion. The treatment uses light-emitting diodes (LED), which activate new collagen formation and inhibit the breakdown of existing collagen. Photomodulation is painless and noninvasive, and there's no trauma to the tissues, which means there's no downtime. Several treatments are needed, spread over weeks or months, as determined by the physician. This treatment can also be used on all skin types.

The bonus: You get a healthy glow, especially after several treatments.

December, 2005 - The wave of the future Imagine a pain-free and anti-aging procedure that takes less than a minute - and delivers results usually seen only after lengthy, arduous facials, peels and "abrasions." Originally designed to help burn victims heal faster, GentleWaves® uses LED photomodulation and is no more invasive than a "Lite-Brite" blinking several hundred times over the course of 30 seconds. The skin benefits from a process similar to photosynthesis in plants; for humans, it builds collagen, diminishing fine lines and wrinkles, and evens the skin's tone. Four to eight weeks of biweekly treatments are recommended, but you'll see results after one or two. In Los Angeles, this treatment is available at: The Kest Clinic, 9201 Sunset Blvd. Suite 500, Beverly Hills 310.276.7601 and American Medical esthetics, 1519 6th Street, Santa Monica 310.460.2444.

June, 2006 - Seeing the light For those of us who unwittingly lounged in the sun long before the invention of self-tanning elixirs, the scientists at Light BioScience have developed a procedure that uses, of all things, light to counteract the effects of aging and sun damage. FDA-approved, GentleWaves ® from Light BioScience uses a photomodulation therapy to eliminate fine lines. The unit itself looks like a lightbright screen with a pulsating yellow light. The best part of this revolutionary therapy is that this "lunchtime facelift" takes only 35 seconds and usually accomplishes its objective in just eight to 10 visits. Rather than using heat to create a wound-healing response to generate collagen production, the GentleWaves® LED photomodulation transmits specific packets of light to change the biological activity of living cells. This collagen-replenishing miracle treatment has also been shown to work on severe sunburns, radiation burns and as a complementary procedure to other anti-aging procedures like microdermabrasion, Botox injections, laser treatments and dermal fillers. The GentleWaves® photomodulation procedure will be offered at the Jose Eber Salon at Fashion Show mall. www.LightBioscience.com.

October, 2003 - GentleWaves®™ zap wrinkles with zero downtime Treatment with light-emitting diodes (LED), also known as photomodulation, is the latest anti-aging solution to hit doctors' offices and, soon, your home. A recent study by Light Bioscience, a company that develops LED technology in Virginia Beach, Virginia, showed that the low-energy pulses of light can improve skin tone, reverse sun damage and diminish fine lines by stimulating the cells that produce firming collagen and elastin. Unlike laser treatment, photomodulation doesn't create heat or injure tissue so there is no need for healing time. Light Bioscience

Treating age spots is less invasive. More dermatologists favor nonablative lasers (like GentleWaves® and Fraxel) and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy. Virginia dermatologist David McDaniel has adopted a method of combining the three to maximize their benefits. IPL, he says, requires fewer treatments, but Fraxel "does a nice job of stimulating collagen," which makes skin less crepey. GentleWaves®, in his opinion, is best for sensitive skin because it causes less redness, pain and swelling. Once a spot is gone, it rarely returns, but the only way to prevent future blotches is to shield hands from the sun.

November, 2006 – Light Therapies: Light energy, delivered as intense pulsed light (IPL treatments) or from light-emittting diodes (GentleWaves), diminishes spots, wrinkles, scars.

How does it work? The light waves stimulate skin cells to produce collagen. IPL takes 30 minutes;LED, 35 seconds.

Pros/Cons: The techniques are nonablative; they’re also painless. Doctors often use LED treatments as a follow-up to other laser and cosmetic procedures.

Cost: $300 to $600 for IPL; $100 for GentleWaves; eight treatments are recommended.
